How to set up eSIM on an iPhone

Setting up an eSIM on your iPhone varies depending on your current phone and cellular service situation.

May 13, 2026

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built directly into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic SIM card, your cellular plan is downloaded and stored digitally on the device.

With eSIM, you can:

  • Activate a cellular plan without inserting a SIM card

  • Store multiple cellular plans on one device

  • Switch between plans in Settings

  • Easily set up service when traveling internationally

To use an eSIM, you will need:

  • An iPhone XR, iPhone XS, or newer. To identify the model of your iPhone, visit this article here.

  • A carrier that supports eSIM

  • A Wi-Fi connection during setup in most cases

To activate an eSIM

There are several different methods for activating an eSIM. The exact method available to you depends on your provider. Common activation methods include:

  • Transferring your number from another iPhone

  • Activation from your carrier

  • Scanning a QR code

  • Entering activation information manually

Transfer Your Number From Another iPhone

If both devices support eSIM transfer, you can move your cellular plan directly from your old iPhone to your new one.

Before you begin, you will need:

  • Both iPhones signed in to the same Apple ID

  • Both devices unlocked with their passcodes

  • Bluetooth enabled

  • Both devices placed close together

If you are setting up a new iPhone, you may be prompted to transfer your phone number from your previous device. Follow the on-screen instructions to move your cellular plan.
Once the transfer finishes, the SIM on your previous phone will automatically deactivate.

1\. Open Settings
2\. Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data)
3\. Tap Add eSIM or Set Up Cellular
4\. Choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone

Follow the prompts on both devices to confirm the transfer.

Carrier eSIM Activation

Some carriers automatically assign an eSIM when you purchase or activate a device through them. In this case, your iPhone may show a notification that a cellular plan is ready to install. In addition, some carriers provide you with a QR code to install the eSim on your phone.

To activate it:

1\. Open the notification or go to Settings
2\. Tap the message showing that a new carrier plan is available
3\. Tap Continue and follow the prompts
4\. After activation, test your connection by placing a call\.

If the new eSIM replaces a physical SIM card, remove the physical SIM and restart the phone.

If your provider sends activation details instead:

1\. Open Settings
2\. Tap Cellular or Mobile Data
3\. Tap Add eSIM
4\. Select Enter Details Manually and enter the information given by your carrier.
